Why Is the Charge on My Card Higher Than My Purchase Amount?

Written by Yolanda Wang

Some merchants may authorise an estimated amount that is higher than the expected purchase amount. This covers any additional charges that aren't known until the transaction is complete. Common examples include:

  • Hotels and car rental companies: The authorised amount may include possible additional charges, such as room service, deposits, or fuel.

  • Restaurants: The authorised amount may include an estimated tip.

  • Fuel stations: The authorised amount may be based on the estimated or maximum cost of the fuel purchase.

Once the merchant confirms the final amount, the transaction will be adjusted accordingly and any difference will be returned to your balance.

What If the Amount Hasn’t Been Adjusted?

Check the transaction status in the Sykka app.

  • If the transaction is still processing, the merchant may not have confirmed the final amount yet.

  • If the transaction is completed but the amount is still higher than expected, contact the merchant to confirm the final charge and request a correction where appropriate.

  • If the merchant has issued a refund, it will be credited to your Sykka balance once we receive it.

If the merchant cannot resolve the issue, contact Sykka Support through the in-app chat with the relevant transaction details.
